Program details
Experience Maui’s very own wild west with a trail ride at the Mendes Ranch. This wonderful farmstead in the coastal foothills of the West Maui Mountains offers you an action-packed day in lush landscapes of indescribable beauty and on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. There are two trails to choose from, the AM and PM – so put on your Stetson and hit the dirt tracks of Hawaii.
Both oceanfront trail rides begin at the Mendes Ranch Corral and take you down along the edge of the scenic valley to the coastline. Here you can take in the breathtaking views from the cliff side of the neverending waters of the Pacific Ocean before heading back up to the corral. The trail guides will happily take photos of you with the majestic seascape in the background. Both trails last about 90 minutes and include refreshments.
The historic Mendes Ranch dates from the 1940s when the Manuel ‘Red’ Mendes took over a rural, isolated homestead northwest of Wailuku. Back then it was tough going: there was no electricity, no running water and the only connections were dirt roads over rugged terrain. Today, Red’s grandson runs a ranch that has grown to more than 1,200 hectares and is home to 300 head of cattle and 80 horses. The story of the Mendes family is the realisation of the American dream: an ancestor emigrated from the Azores Island in the 1860s thus switching from an archipelago far away in the middle of the Atlantic to one in the middle of the Pacific.
