It’s a tale of two cities for this epic walking tour of Nara and Kyoto. Explore these cities renowned for their beauty and historic architecture in one day, with a4.5km stroll through Nara in the morning and a 3.5km walk through Kyoto after lunch. This fascinating excursion includes return travel on the Kintetsu Express train to Nara.

The monumental but compact city of Nara is renowned for the eight Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara. The 4.5km walking route takes in the Todaiji Temple, one of the largest and oldest wooden structures in the world, and famed for its enormous bronze Buddha image. Visit the natural wonder that is the Nara Park (Deer Park) and wander among the 1,100 or so tame deer – they are considered divine messengers – roaming about the park. Stand back and take in the imposing Kofukuji Temple, which was transferred here from Kyoto in the year 710. Its five-story pagoda is the second-highest in Japan.

Return to Kyoto Station, where we’ll have lunch before beginning the afternoon route.

Kyoto is packed with stunning historic and architectural gems, and this 3.5km walking tour will take you on an awe-inspiring journey into the past. The Kiyomizu Temple has a main hall on a steep slope with a wooden platform supported by pillars from which you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Kyoto. The Kodaiji Temple was founded by the widow of 16th century general Toyotomi Hideyoshi to commemorate him. The Yasaka Shrine is the central site for the Gion-Matsuri Festival, held every summer. Wander the narrow alleys of the Gion District, an area famous for its entertainment and geishas. It retains its tranquil, old-fashioned charm and is home to traditional restaurants and tea-houses.

Meeting point: Assemble at Kyoto Station in front of Nippon Travel Agency office 10 minutes before the departure time of 8.30am. Tour ends in the Gion district at 6pm.
