Hong Kong may have modernised at breakneck speed but there’s one tradition that has remained virtually untouched: the markets. This half-day tour visits eight of the most colourful markets in Kowloon, bringing you right into the heart of the authentic Hong Kong. The adventure begins on a fragrant note at the Flower Market, famed for its luck-bringing houseplants before moving on to the nearby Yuen Po Street Bird Garden, where it’s easy to forget about the crazy city streets that lie just outside the gates. Then we visit to Goldfish Street, where you will learn why the goldfish is the preferred pet of locals and how they are said to bring lucky feng shui.
Immerse yourself in Mong Kok – the world’s most densely populated neighbourhood with more than 130,000 people per square kilometre – and haggle at the Ladies Market, famed for its bargain-priced clothes, bags and accessories. At Shanghai Street, head into the century-old Yau Ma Tei fruit market then call by the Jade Market and find out why locals believe jade can ward off health hazards and bad feng shui.
The final stop is a visit to Temple Street. Live and breathe atmosphere of this world-famous night market or admire the Sea Goddess Temple that is the street’s namesake and the Yau Ma Tei Public Plaza, where locals like to spend a lazy afternoon under the beautiful banyan trees.
