Program details
This private tour of the Soganli Valley area and the Unesco World Heritage Site at Goreme is an ideal introduction to the riches of Cappadocia. After breakfast we'll head straight for the Open Air Museum at Goreme where you can explore the remains of early Christian settlements and rock churches dating back over a thousand years. This region that was first settled in Roman times is especially renowned for its rock chapels, cut into the living rock by early Christians with stunningly beautiful frescoes.
Then we 'll head for Soganli, a traditional Anatolian village where not much seems to have changed for hundreds of years. There are many churches and monasteries in this area, mainly dating from the period between the 9th and 13th Centuries. We will visit the most important including the churches at Karabas, Yilanli, Kubbeli and Sakli Kilise before stopping for some lunch and a rest.
Next stop is the village of Mustafapasa, once known as Sinesos. This settlement was inhabited by a substantial Greek population before their expulsion in 1924. We'll drive on to the recently excavated ruins of the Roman city of Sobesos where you can admire the beautifully crafted floor mosaics. You can also explore the Taskinpasa Medresesi, an Islamic theological school dating from Ottoman times and the early mediaeval Keslik Monastery before returning to your hotel.
