Program details
San Diego's mild climate makes kayaking a great activity any time of the year. Kayak the La Jolla Sea Caves and Ecological Reserve, which boasts an amazing array of scenery and wildlife you can't find anywhere else in the city. Paddle alongside an expert guide through kelp forests and incredible caves and other rock formations, and you might spot sea lions, dolphins, harbour seals, bat rays, and harmless leopard sharks.
Tours are held daily, year round, and are approximately one and a half to two hours. Free parking is available on side streets. Please arrive 30 minutes before tour time to check in and get fitted for equipment. Please contact the supplier for up-to-date information on tour times and meeting locations, as they vary and are subject to change without notice. Tours include stable, sit-on-top kayaks (single or tandem), paddle, life jacket, and helmet. Wetsuit rentals are offered during fall, winter and spring. Waterproof cameras are available for sale. Swimsuits, easy-to-dry shorts and a top and/or windbreakers are recommended. No flip flops, water shoes are preferable, but shoes are not necessary. Small lockers are available.
Participants must be six years or older and must be able to swim. No experience is necessary, but tour requires some physical strength. For safety reasons, going into the caves is not guaranteed and will happen weather permitting. Guides are expert naturalists with backgrounds in marine biology, ecology, environmental science photography, and outdoor recreation, and hold advanced certifications in kayak instruction and CPR/First Aid.
