Program details
Indulge in Tokyo’s vibrant food culture, one of the many reasons why people flock to the Japanese capital, with this fantastic evening tour. Join ordinary Japanese people to sample some of Tokyo’s most iconic everyday flavours in the places where they originated. Feel like a true Tokyo local and discover places you’d never find on your own.Throughout your Tokyo food tour, your local guide will explain the history of food and places you visit, sharing personal experiences and food-related family traditions and customs. Begin your tour in Yakitori Alley, near Yurakucho, an area with many casual bar-style restaurants and the birthplace of yakitori, one of the nation’s favourite appetizers. Join the many businessmen and women who flock to these bars at 5pm, and enjoy a drink of sake or a local beer, then sample yakitori at one of the many local restaurants, each with its own ‘tare’ (sauce) made with secret ingredients.
Then travel to Tsukishima to visit Monja Street, where Monja-Yaki is said to have originated. Often compared with Okonomi-yaki in Osaka, Monja-yaki is a type of Japanese pan-fried batter with various ingredients. The ingredients are finely chopped and mixed into the batter before grilling. You’ll have the chance to watch your food being cooked, chat with the cook, and devour your Monja-yaki fresh from the hot plate. On our way back to Yurakucho, pick up some “tai-yaki”, a cake with a soft red bean and sugar filling, for dessert. End your delicious Tokyo tour by heading to a local pub for some more drinks, where you’re welcome to linger, discover nearby bars and karaoke joints, or return to the starting point with your guide.
