The harbour at Mahon is one of the most strategically important ports in the Western Mediterranean. The area now occupied by the Fortress of La Mola was originally fortified by the British in the 18th Century and the present fortress dates from the 19th Century. A walk around the fortress is fascinating experience for all ages with spectacular views over the largest deep water harbour in the Mediterranean.

The Fortress of La Mola is a splendid example of 19th Century military architecture. It was built by the Spanish Government in the mid 19th Century to defend the harbour against threats from Britain and France to due to its strategic location astride the main sea routes between Gibraltar and Malta and Metropolitan France and Algeria. On this walk around the fortress you can admire the different defensive fronts, underground galleries, walled moats, casements and artillery and machine gun emplacements.

La Mola was built on a peninsula dominating the entrance to Port Mahon so you can enjoy great views back into the harbour, out to sea and across to Llatzeret Island, site of an old lazaretto or quarantine station for maritime travellers. The area is also a nature reserve and is particularly rich in bird life, having being declared a Special Protection Area for birdlife.
