Program details
Brasilia lights up at night and become a new city altogether with its modern architecture radiantly illuminated. Enjoy a new perspective of the main monuments created by Oscar Niemeyer and other architects such as the TV tower, the Buriti Palace, the JK Memorial, the cathedral, the Monumental Axis and Praça dos Tres Poderes.
Designed by Lucio Costa, the 224 metre-high TV tower is oh-so Sixties and has a prominent position in the Monumental Axis. Facing it is the Buriti Palace, which was designed by Nauro Jorge Esteves and houses the regional government offices. It was one of the later constructions and is a late-Sixties vintage.
The JK Memorial is a museum designed by Niemeyer and dedicated to Juscelino Kubitschek, the president from 1956 to 1961, who founded futuristic Brasilia as the federal capital in the middle of the savannah. The Metropolitan Cathedral is considered one of Niemeyer’s ultimate masterpieces both for its exterior and interior, where between the concrete arches, stained glass panels show heaven while angels hang from the ceiling.
Central Brasilia is shaped like an aeroplane and the Monumental Axis is fuselage. This broad boulevard is flanked by 17 buildings housing ministries that have been harmoniously located with architectonic regularity.
Niemeyer’s Praça dos Tres Poderes (Three Powers Square) is where the presidential office, the National Congress and the Federal Supreme Court are located. After this stop, visit some night spots and enjoy dinner in a barbecue restaurant (drinks not included).
