Program details
Discover Brasilia with this fascinating tour of the capital that takes in the main sights and attractions as well as one of the many planned neighbourhoods known as superblocks. This six-hour adventure offers a glittering vision of how Sixties architects and planners envisioned the future.
Visit a superblock neighbourhood in the Asa Sul and see how urban planner Lucio Costa conceived of the ‘perfect living space’. These blocks successfully fuse housing, amenities and commercial activities, all centred on a landscaped green belt. The focal point is the Church of Our Lady of Fatima, which looks like a nun’s cornette. Also in the same block is the Dom Bosco Sanctuary, which boasts a dramatic use of stained glass.
Costa’s TV tower has a prominent position in the Monumental Axis and is a fine example of e Sixties architecture and engineering. See also the Oscar Niemeyer-designed Brazilian Army Headquarters while the cathedral is considered one of Niemeyer’s greatest creations.
The Monumental Axis is a broad boulevard flanked by 17 buildings housing ministries. Admire the Itamaraty Palace, which houses the foreign affairs ministry, and is a monument to modernism with concrete columns, glass and free spaces. Niemeyer’s Praça dos Tres Poderes (Three Powers Square) is where the presidential office, the National Congress and the Federal Supreme Court are located.
The Central Bank Museum, home of the largest gold stone found in Brazil, is also a standout attraction and there’s a visit to the futuristic National Congress. Then see the president’s residence, the majestic Alvorada Palace, and much, much more.
