Program details
Visit the delightful water town of Zhujiajiao with this engrossing day-long tour. Located on the outskirts of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao is an ancient settlement that can trace its origins back over 1,700 thousand years. An important trading centre for the surrounding countryside, it prospered with its clothing and rice industries and many of the buildings that can be seen here today were built in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Traditionally, goods and people were ferried on the small canals from house to house, passing under the 36 stone bridges that still survive intact today.
Among the popular landmarks you will visit on this tour is the former post office: built in 1903 it is said to be the best-preserved Qing post office in the whole of China. Then to escape from the hustle and bustle we make our way to the Shanghai Botanical Garden, the largest municipal botanical garden in China, which houses an astonishingly varied array of Chinese plants in a display that extends over 80,000 hectares. Another popular destination on the itinerary is the City God Temple. Dating back to the Ming Dynasty, this constitutes one of the city’s most important Taoist shrines.
Finally, a visit to Shecy Pearl City will enable you to discover the world of pearls and the extraordinary iridescent properties of these precious gemstones at close quarters. Lunch at a local restaurant is included.
Prepare yourself for a kaleidoscope of experiences with this evocative day-long tour of Zhujiajiao.
