Turgutreis (formerly the village of Karatoprak, before being renamed in 1972 in honour of the Turkish seaman Turgut Reis who was born here in 1485) is the second largest town in the Bodrum peninsula and is 20 kilometres from Bodrum. It is located in a rich valley planted with orchards and vegetable gardens, making the town a centre for agricultural commerce. The town is also a popular holiday destination with its 5 kilometres of sandy beaches, waterfront restaurants and bars.
