Ancient Ahmedabad is one of India’s most fascinating cities with a collection of architectural and cultural gems that has put it on the map. This four-hour tour takes a look at the top sight and attraction of a city whose location close to the fault line between Islamic and Hindu cultures has bequeathed a number of majestic mosques and Jain temples. There is also the jewel in the city’s crown: the former home of Mahatma Gandhi.
Visit the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque to see the beautifully carved stone latticework windows, which are so intricate and fragile that it’s a miracle they have survived for hundreds of years. Continue to the Jama Masjid, perhaps the most beautiful mosque in Ahmedabad. This classic of Mughal design has 15 domes and a prayer hall supported by 260 columns.
Head to the city’s Jain temples and admire a distinctly more elaborate style of architecture, with the awe-inspiring Hathee Singh Jain Temple being the most representative. Its carved walls are a sight to behold. Pass by the famous shaking minarets of the Sidi Bashir Mosque, which remain a mystery till today. If one minaret shakes, the other resonates in harmony while the interconnecting terrace stands still.
Cap off the tour at Sabarmati Ashram, which was Mahatma Gandhi’s home from 1918-1930. This simple home is tucked away in a quiet corner by the river Sabarmati. It was from here that Gandhi set off on the Salt March, which triggered the non-violent agitation against the British.
