This tour of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, the two most interesting districts, reveals the richness of multicultural life in the city since reunification.
Kreuzberg, which was in West Berlin, and Friedrichshain, which was in East Berlin, are linked by a single bridge, which served as a border crossing between East and West. These two areas reflect the diverse histories of the two Berlin and the architecture reflects this. With large numbers of immigrant residents and a heritage of working-class occupants, students and artists, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain celebrate a climate of cultural diversity and tolerance. The areas have become a young and modern reflection of the new Berlin, with a trendy atmosphere of lively pubs, clubs and nightspots.

Karl-Marx-Allee is the main boulevard through Friedrichshain and was where military parades took place in communist times. See the Frankfurter Tor, two landmark towers that resemble the church domes on Gendarmenmarkt.
