Program details

Relive the glory and grandeur of France’s Bourbon monarchs with this tour of the stunning the Palace of Versailles. Arrive by train in comfort and style and then enjoy a guided visit of the King and Queen's State apartments and the newly restored Hall of Mirrors. You also have free time to explore the gorgeous gardens if you wish.

The Unesco World Heritage Site Versailles was built over five decades during the late 17th and early 18th centuries in what was then a fairly distant country district away from the masses in Paris. It is most closely associated with the flamboyant Louis XIV, the Sun King, who had an unquenchable appetite for grandeur. He moved the royal family – and thus the whole mechanism of the state – to the chateau, leaving the capital to the impoverished masses.

Centuries later, the dimensions of the palace are breathtaking. It has a floor area of more than 67,000sq.m; it has 2,300 rooms and 2,153 windows but just a mere 67 staircases. There are more than 20,000 works of art and over 5,000 pieces of furniture. All are priceless antiques. There is a chapel and even has an impossibly golden opera house – where the wedding celebrations of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were held – with seating for more than 700.

During the high season and special occasions, there are fountain display and ‘musical gardens’ at Versailles.
