Program details
Head to Rhode Island to experience one of America’s most beautiful cities on this fabulous Newport tour from Boston. Newport is famous for its huge numbers of surviving colonial buildings, luxurious lifestyle and famous residents, including Jackie Kennedy. Many of the nation’s most famous and wealthy families summered in Newport over the years, including the millionaire Vanderbilts.
Visit The Breakers, a 70-room mansion on 11 acres of oceanfront land, one of the Vanderbilt mansions and a National Historic Landmark. This incredible 70-room mansion sits on 11 acres of oceanfront land, and offers a glimpse of the unimaginable wealth and luxury of the Gilded Age, when the Vanderbilts were among the major industrialists of America. From the Italianate Great Hall decorated with limestone figure celebrating humanity’s progress in art, science and literature to the gorgeous library, with walnut panelling, gold leaf and green Spanish leather, everything about The Breakers evokes the huge power and importance of this Dutch family.
Explore the lavish legacy of the Vanderbilts further with a visit to William K. Vanderbilt’s summer home, The Marble House – 500,000 cubic feet of marble, built in 1892 and completely groundbreaking in opulence and style at the time it was built. Even 100 years ago, the mansion still cost $11 million, with grounds including a Chinese teahouse modelled on 12th century temples, French neoclassical porticoes and Beaux Arts detailing. The fantastically rich décor, vast size and refined style of this incredible mansion make it completely unique in the Americas. Drive along ten mile Ocean Drive, and enjoy spectacular views of mansions and coves on one of the wealthiest streets in America before returning to Boston.
