Program details
Gladiators, lions, mock-sea battles… the Coliseum saw them all on an epic scale and now you and your family can relive this historic arena’s highs and lows with a guided tour specifically designed for families with children aged from about seven to 12. The visit has been designed by an early childhood education specialist to engage the whole family with role-playing, visual, and challenges that will keep everyone involved as the gladiator arena and Roman Forum are brought to life.
Explore the Flavian Amphitheatre, as the Coliseum was originally called, and learn about the spectacles that took place in the arena: the fights between wild animals; the brutal executions, the bombastic blockbuster naval battles and the hand-to-hand combats between gladiators. Learn how crowds of up 70,000 spectators wound throng the stands, baying for blood, whooping and cheering at the stroke of each sword and swing of each mace.
The guide will enthusiastically narrate the history of the Coliseum through stories and anecdotes about the brave men who fought and died here, and the emperors who ruled them, creating vivid pictures of the past. Feel free to participate and encourage your children to ask questions. Groups total about 25 participants or fewer. Expert, kid-approved guides lead all tours. The guides’ energy and love of working with children make this experience one that your family will not want to miss!
Meeting/ pick-up point: At Largo Gaetana Agnesi, above the 2nd floor of the metro line B (blue line) stop "Colosseo". Your guide coordinator will be waiting here wearing a blue polo shirt or jacket for easy recognition.
